The Beta Bionics iLet is an AID system that only requires the user’s weight to get started. Instead of carb counting, the iLet just needs an estimate of the carbs in your meal. It is currently compatible with the Dexcom G7 and the FreeStyle Libre 3.
What are everyone’s thoughts on this system? Would you prefer to use this as a more hands off approach?
I haven’t tried it myself, but considered it. In Evaluation I was told its goal is to keep you at around 7% A1c. Which is GREAT for some people, but I wanted better control. So I stuck with MDI, and I am currently hovering in the 5.7% - 6.3% range.
Thanks for sharing @FredM400! It’s always fascinating to hear which devices people choose to use, and it seems like MDI is working wonderfully for you right now!
I appreciate the automated thought process on dosing (Control IQ was a game changer), but technology has limitations. For example, what happens your bg is high because your site is going bad or you have a bad batch of insulin. How long does it take for the iLet to make that correction for a 400bg? Do you step in with injections? And if so, how does that pump account for that added dose? I sometimes have to go on short course steroid dose pack which is not ideal but necessary sometimes. I usually need to increase my basal by 20-30% on those days. How quickly can the iLet figure that out?
The iLet sounds really intriguing having fewer inputs just weight, and estimated carbs could reduce decision fatigue. But I’d want to see how accurate it is in edge cases meals with mixed macros, exercise nights, etc. If it works well, I’d totally consider a more hands off pump.
